The Fairtrade Foundation has announced Eleanor Harrison OBE as its new Chief Executive Officer, set to begin her role in March. A highly respected changemaker and strategist, Eleanor brings two decades of experience leading purpose-driven organisations and delivering social impact.

Eleanor was most recently CEO of Impetus, a venture philanthropy nonprofit focused on improving social outcomes for disadvantaged young people. Her career achievements have earned widespread recognition, including being awarded the Order of the British Empire in 2016 for Services to International Development.

Her leadership journey includes serving as Chief Executive of GlobalGiving UK, where she harnessed entrepreneurial vision and commercial acumen to disrupt traditional aid models and accelerate community-led change. Additionally, Eleanor has held leadership roles in several international NGOs, including five years in Kenya supporting children and families to build brighter futures.

A commitment to empowering communities has been central to Eleanor’s work. From supporting Fairtrade Fortnight in the 1990s to helping Wrexham become a Welsh Fairtrade town in 2003, her connection to the Fairtrade movement runs deep. She currently serves as Chair of the Asylum Reform Initiative, leading campaigns for refugee-friendly policies, and was previously Vice Chair of BOND, the UK network for international development organisations.

Speaking on her new role, Eleanor Harrison OBE said:
“I’m thrilled to join The Fairtrade Foundation at such an exciting time. Fairtrade’s mission to connect producers and consumers and promote fair trading conditions aligns perfectly with my values. Now, more than ever, trade must work better for people and the planet amid growing political, economic, and environmental challenges.

“I look forward to building on Michael Gidney’s legacy, increasing consumer demand for Fairtrade products, supporting our incredible business partners, and growing our impact for producers. I will lead with empathy, ambition, and warmth as we take Fairtrade to the next level.”

Nyagoy Nyong’o, Chair of the Fairtrade Foundation Board of Trustees, expressed her enthusiasm for the appointment, saying: “We are delighted that Eleanor Harrison is joining the Fairtrade Foundation as CEO. Her track record of driving meaningful change, coupled with her visionary leadership and compassion, makes her the perfect choice to guide the Foundation into the future.

“Over the past three decades, Fairtrade has made significant strides in sustainability, ensuring our work reflects the realities of producers’ lives. Eleanor’s expertise and energy will help us continue to grow our impact and influence.”

Fiona Kindness, Chief Financial Officer, will serve as interim Chief Executive until Eleanor steps into the role. She takes over from Michael Gidney, who stepped down in December after 12 successful years leading the organisation.
